Children and proper nutrition: A never-ending struggle

Did you know that almost 2 in 3 children do not get the nutrition that they necessarily should? The type and amount of nutrients that your child intakes stimulate their growth and development. Keeping the tenderness of children in mind, this is the age when they are most prone to diseases that might develop later.


To eradicate diseases and ensure that your child is healthy, a proper diet is what Mothers should focus on.


Healthy eating habits in children


Solid Food intake

  • Children between the age of 2 to 18 years should not intake more than 6 Tablespoons ( 25g) of Sugar per day.

  • Between the age of 1 to 3 years, 39g of fats per day for every 1000 calories consumed is ideal. At this age, about 30 to 40% of calories come from fats.

  • Every child irrespective of their age range should intake a minimum of 2 servings of fruits per day. However, the vegetable intake should be high and regular.

  • For the children between 14 to 18 years, their daily diet must include Cereals, High-Fibre, and Whole Grains amounting to approximately 2oz per day.




Liquid food intake


The liquid intake of a child is as necessary as the solid intake. According to the US Geological survey, our body comprises 60% of liquids. However, the liquid intake in children should be limited to 4 cups of beverages per day. Excessive liquids in the body promote Type 2 Diabetes, heart and lung diseases, and Obesity. Next time your child gets thirsty, serve them water, not juices.


Benefits of water in your body-

  • Water promotes the removal of waste from the Kidney through the blood. It helps in removing waste substances with the help of Urination, Defection, and Perspiration.

  • An adequate amount of liquid prevents Constipation and maintains body temperature and provides Immunity.

  • Water acts as a medium to transport Nutrients and Oxygen to the different parts of our body.

With each passing day, people, especially children are prone to deadly diseases. If proper precautions are taken, this risk can be prevented. A healthy child’s diet includes Nutrients, Fruits and vegetables, water, grains, and dairy products. Always remember, a healthy diet leads to a healthy life.
